A WOMAN who threatened a pregnant 16-year-old girl into making false rape allegations has been jailed for 15 months.
Judge Keith Cutler said in Salisbury Crown Court on Friday that there were many victims of Victoria Spreadbury’s crime – perverting the course of justice.
Spreadbury, 21, of Friary Lane, Salisbury, told the girl she would be beaten until she lost her baby if she did not make allegations of sexual assault and rape against a man Spreadbury hated.
The frightened girl made the false allegations to police in September last year, causing the innocent man to be arrested, interviewed and held in custody for 22 hours before he was released on bail.
The court heard he had to speak to a mental health expert, was prescribed anti-depressants and had to be signed off work, because of the ordeal he was put through by Spreadbury.
The teenage girl returned to the police station two days after the man was interviewed and admitted that she had lied because she had been threatened.
Katy Longan, defending, said Spreadbury had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, had made full admissions in interview and the whole matter was resolved in ten days.
She said her client had a troubled upbringing and turned to drugs – heroin, crack cocaine, ecstasy and amphetamines – at a young age, and that she had self-harmed and tried to kill herself in prison.
Judge Cutler said Spreadbury had caused an innocent man to face the threat of many years imprisonment and a young girl to live in fear for her baby’s life and to deal with the feelings of guilt and remorse for falsely accusing a man of rape.
“The third victims of your crime are the real people who suffer these sorts of crimes because people then start to think, perhaps all people making these accusations are liars. Your actions have all that impact onto others – there are so many varied and different victims to this crime.”
He sentenced her to 15 months imprisonment, with credit given for the days she has already served.

Una donna che ha minacciato una ragazzina incinta di 16 anni, per farle fare delle false accuse di stupro, è stata incarcerata e sconterà una pena di 15 mesi.
Il giudice Keith Cutler ha detto venerdì nel tribunale di Salisbury che – per aver tentato di deviare il corso della giustizia – le vittime del reato commesso da Victoria Spreadbury sono molte.
Spreadbury, 21 anni, di Friary Lane, Salisbury, ha detto alla ragazzina che l'avrebbe picchiata fino a farle perdere il bambino se non avesse fatto delle accuse di stupro contro un uomo di Spreadbury che lei odiava.
La ragazzina, terrorizzata, fece le false accuse alla polizia nel Settembre dello scorso anno, provocando l'arresto di un uomo, il suo interrogatorio e la sua detenzione per 22 ore prima del suo rilascio dietro cauzione.
Il tribunale ha appreso che l'uomo ha dovuto contattare un esperto di sanità mentale, che gli son stati prescritti degli anti-depressivi e che ha dovuto lasciare il lavoro, tutto questo per la sofferenza che ha patito a causa della Spreadbury.
La giovane ragazza è tornata alla stazione di polizia due giorni dopo che l'uomo venne interrogato, e ha ammeso di essersi inventata tutto perchè era sotto minaccia.
Katy Longan, l'avvocato difensore, ha detto che la Spreadbury ha ammesso la propria colpevolezza immediatamente, ha rilasciato ammissioni complete durante l'interrogatorio e l'intera questione si è risolta in dieci giorni.
La Longan ha detto che la sua assistita ha avuto un'adolescenza difficile, e ha fatto uso di droghe – eroina, crack, cocaina, ecstasy e anfetamine – già in giovane età, e che ha provato a farsi del male e di uccidersi mentre era in prigione.
Il giudice Cutler ha detto che la Spreadbury ha fatto rischiare ad un uomo innocente di finire in carcere per molti anni, e ha fatto vivere nella paura una giovane ragazza per il bambino che portava in grembo, come anche per i sentimenti di colpa e rimorso per aver fatto delle false accuse di stupro contro un uomo.
"La terza vittima del tuo crimine sono le persone che veramente soffrono a causa di questi crimini, perchè la gente poi inizia a pensare che forse tutte le persone che fanno queste accuse sono delle bugiarde. Le tue azioni hanno un impatto anche su altri – c'è tutta una serie di molte e diverse vittime per via di questo crimine".
Il giudice ha condannato la donna a 15 mesi di galera, con il credito per i giorni che ha già scontato.
